BlackPlanet is the largest Black community online. Users can socialize and meet Black women and men for friendship, networking or dating. Users can open up and express their opinions in the forum's groups, chat rooms and blogs. Users are also able to showcase themselves their talent using the site's personal profile and networking with other members of the online community. Also, users can have fun meeting Black people who share their interests. Users of the BlackPlanet community can also find other members on the site by seeing who is online, by attributes like gender, age, location, whether the user has photos on their profile, their relationship status and finally their sexual orientation. The site also lists a number of fun features for its users including Farmandia, setup VIP lists, takes quizzes, get rated by other members and become a secret admirer of another member. Finally, users can look through photos posted by other members, listen to music and submit and read the blogs of other members.
Blackplanet was founded in 1999 by Omar Wasow and is aimed specifically at bringing the Black community together. In April 2008, Radio One acquired BlackPlanet and its parent company Community Connect Inc. for $38 million, along with partner sites Asian Avenue and Mi Gente.
There are hundreds of other social networking sites on the Internet but BlackPlanet is a little different. Instead of being designed for everyone this social network is designed specifically for the Black community. Omar Wasow created this site so that African Americans would have their very own social networking platform. The site has many members and lots of activity.
BlackPlanet has a basic design and is pretty straightforward for a social network. The application is intuitive and easy to use. It is supported by full-image banner ads, typically one in the footer and another in the header, and these can be a bit distracting. The app was relatively fast and responsive and there were no bugs or errors encountered during this review.
To register for BlackPlanet, users can go to the homepage and to the right of the page, the site will request one's email address, a preferred member name, password, gender, date of birth and their country and zip code.
BlackPlanet is completely free to use and is supported by adverts. These aren’t noticeable and don’t pose any problem. You can choose if you like to receive third-party offers from BlackPlanet partners when signing up.
BlackPlanet is an application for any Black person, or anyone interested in the Black community. The site has features that mimic Facebook, however it is completely geared towards a Black audience.
